July 2010

Dear Friend of Rakestraw Books,
Walking the Danville Farmers' Market last Saturday felt like the first gift of summer: blackberries and peaches; the first really good corn and tomatoes; and lots of friends stopping to chat. And, between some planned dinner parties and one terrific author event on July 24, I know I'll be back every week this month to enjoy this community treasure.
In celebration of summer, we are excited to host a wonderful range of author appearances this month -- novelists, runners, cookbook authors, even a local parenting writer. It's all good stuff and any one of them is a great reason to venture downtown!
Most of this month's book recommendations are in paperback -- perfect for tucking into your bag to take to the beach or the pool or even that sunny rock up on the hill above Tao House. There are some great reads here including This Is Where I Leave You, one of our favorites from 2009. And, of course, we're always pleased to make suggestions that are more tailored to your own tastes and interests; just drop by the shop.
Note: We're starting a new book group just for high school students this month. Encourage the teen in your life to read the featured book and come join the fun. More information is below or feel free to call the shop at (925) 837-7337.
All of us here look forward to seeing you soon. Until then, Happy Reading!
Sincerely yours,
Michael Barnard & the Staff
